Dear Friend,

Life is hard.  Nowhere in the Bible do we find that if we are Christians, we will be spared heartache, pain, agony, and loss.  In fact, the Bible reveals godly men and women who experience a number of heart breaking events. . . infertility, loss of babies and children, murder, addictions, death of loved ones, loss of job/career.

Fellowship Bible Church has four core values of worship, community, growth, and service. Our mission is growing compelling relationships with God and others that have an irresistible influence in our world.  Therefore, we recognize and value our need for authenticity and transparency in community, particularly when heartbreak occurs.  There are many in our body who have struggled with loss and have experienced the value of journeying with a genuine friend.  A friend who will sit in the ashes and cry with us.  A friend who will provide comfort by pointing us to Christ.

In this devotional, you will read stories of courageous individuals who are willing to share their broken hearts and the stories behind them.  They do so in hope that it will provide you encouragement to persevere in your loss.

As you work through the grieving process, prayerfully read each devotional, taking time to answer the reflection questions.  Because each writer struggled to share a portion of his or her personal journey, these stories may awaken in you some of your own pain and grief as well.  Perhaps pain and grief you did not know existed.  God often uses the stories of others to comfort us in our own journey (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). The common thread throughout each narrative is that Jesus, our Great Shepherd, meets us at whatever crossroads we find ourselves and proves again and again that He is our inexhaustible hope beyond loss.

Dear Friend,

Are you struggling with surviving the loss of your loved one(s)? I have. Soon after my parents were murdered I turned to God for Biblical resources to help me and comfort me in my darkest hours. I could not find any books on the market specific to my loss and grief.  However, the Lord provided me with His Word, my prayer-partner, friend, and colleague, Dr. June Hetzel, and this devotional project of Hope Beyond Homicide: Remembrance Devotionals that became a way for me to share my heartache and hope with others who have experienced homicidal loss.

Through a great deal of time and tears, God has developed through us this Christ-centered devotional collection written by Christians from all walks of life who have lost loved ones to homicide. The purpose of this devotional collection is to draw you, the grieving reader, to experience God’s presence through God’s Word, personal testimony, and prayer as the foundation for the healing process of homicidal loss. We pray this collection will help you to spend time with God, pour out your heart, develop a deeper walk with the Lord, and understand that you are not alone. As you work through the healing process, prayerfully read a devotional each week, taking time to answer the reflection questions. Use the calendar portion of this devotional to keep track of important dates, perhaps even special dates with friends, family, counselor, and spiritual advisors who will love and support you, or use that additional space to journal daily about your thoughts and feelings. If you need to take a break and come back to the devotional, by all means do so. Each author struggled to share a portion of his or her personal journey, and the journeys shared may awaken in you some of your own pain and grief as well. Go slowly and pay attention to emotions that begin to surface. Allow yourself to continue in the grief process—let the emotions flow, cry out to the Lord, sit quietly before Him, journal, and share your deepest heartaches and fears with the only Hope beyond homicide there is, Jesus Christ.
